CIVIC PRIDE The Public Buildings of Wiltshire Towns – New Publication
This new book in the Wiltshire Buildings Record series on building types covers new ground, being a study of the prominent but often unregarded civic buildings of the county. Some began as houses until their use was changed. A few are clearly vernacular but others were designed by a variety of architects. These buildings exhibit a wide range of styles and building materials.
The book first describes the development of the various public services and the way this is mirrored in the buildings. A gazetteer follows, covering each of the nine building types in the 19 towns. There are indexes of buildings and architects.
Generously illustrated and with authoritative text, James Holden’s book describes the evolution of services in the towns. The book is full of information and surprises – swimming pools were preceded by designated bathing places on local rivers, the County Record Office began in a former mattress factory.
