The Stonehenge Landscape. A walk with Hadrian Cook.
Wedneday 16 April 2025A circular walk with Hadrian Cook, starting and finishing at the Woodhenge car park. The objective is not to visit Stonehenge itself, but to provide insight into its atmospheric setting. This circular walk allows insight into one of the most iconic prehistoric chalkland landscapes in England. Monuments visited are Neolithic and Early Bronze Age in date and, together with associated trackways and the Avenue, still provide a template for the modern largely agricultural landscape.
We will visit: Woodhenge, Cuckoo Stone, Durrington Walls, Cursus and longbarrow, old and new Kings Barrows and observe Stonehenge along the Avenue. A handout will be provided on the day.
Directions: Turn left off to Woodhenge from the A345P, about 1.5km (one mile) north of the Countess Roundabout (where the A345 crosses the A 303). There is a car park at a bend of this road about 300m from the junction with the main road. We will meet in the carpark and proceed to the Woodhenge compound opposite the car park.
