Britford’s water management and lost medieval landscape. A walk with Hadrian Cook.
Wedneday 20 May 2025A circular walk with Hadrian Cook, starting at Bridge Farm and finishing there with a cream tea. The interest in Britford village (and former historic Manor) is often overshadowed by other points of interest in our area. This sometime royal manor located at a fording point on the River Avon has a church of great historic interest, including Anglo-Saxon features and re-used Roman tiles. Many will know of Britford for its Navigation canal and operational watermeadows that are of national significance. These modifications of the river and its floodplain, largely seventeenth century, were predated by enclosed common land that may have included a ‘Lammas Meadow’ and probable deer park associated with the Manor House. Development of the modern village plan will be discussed.
A handout will be provided on the day.
